HUANG GANG
黃鋼
B.1961
Huang Gang’s creations are simple, direct, free and full of power. Beneath the simple composition and shape of the works, these antiquities are actually cultural codes which carries great historical and cultural significance. A strong visual tension spreads slowly when looking at his pieces, awakening the eternal oriental wisdom in your heart.
Huang Gang was born in Beijing in 1961 and studied at the Central Academy of Art and Design, China, graduating with a B.A. in Fine Art in 1984 followed by an M.A. in Environmental Art in 1991. The son of a prominent Chinese art history professor, Huang Gang was surrounded by traditional Chinese art and calligraphy since childhood. Raised during the Cultural Revolution, these dual influences are often reflected in Huang Gang’s artwork. In the 1980s, Huang Gang developed an interest in traditional Tibetan culture, which inspired him to incorporate Tibetan methods and motifs in his work. Huang Gang’s preoccupation with traditional Chinese and Tibetan culture comes as a response to the rapid socio-economic transformation in China throughout the 1990s.
Huang Gang’s artworks have been exhibited many times around the world. He has held solo exhibitions in Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Italy, Hong Kong and the United States and has achieved great success. His works have been recognized and highly praised by audiences from different countries, regions and cultural backgrounds. Many of his works have been collected by private collectors and major art institutions, such as China Asia Art Center in Beijing.
