New Year pictures are an ancient folk art in China. One of the main points of “New Year pictures” is to promote the creative transformation of folk art represented by them. For more than 20 years, Hu JinXiong has insisted on creating Lingnan folk paintings, thus he is known as “The Watchman of Traditional Folk Culture”.
Born in Guangzhou, China in 1969, Hu JinXiong learned to paint under the instruction of his father, Hu QiGen. He struggled for 10 years for his painting style to mature, and finally when it did, he also emerged in the art world. His works have been selected for large-scale art exhibitions and won awards at home and abroad. He has been invited to hold solo exhibitions in France, Singapore, Taiwan, etc. Now, he is a painter under the Guangdong Artists Association Art Center and a National Second-Level Artist.
Hu has accomplished what very few contemporary Chinese artists have in the attempt to develop modern Chinese painting from folk art – namely, to persistently, extensively, and irreversibly draw ideas from folk art, and to continue evolving along this path when many have merely absorbed superficial aspects or turned their attention to other explorations. Making an incessant stream of discoveries and innovations from a unique stem of traditional art, he has developed a wholly distinct “post-folk” style and artistic maturity, earning him a place in Who’s Who in Contemporary Chinese Art for several years running.
