NIU YUHE
牛玉河
B.1982
Working primarily in acrylic on canvas, Niu’s practice centers on the motif of “mountain and rock” as a site for reconfiguring the language of contemporary landscape. Drawing upon the visual grammar of Song dynasty shanshui painting, he adopts a dispersed perspective and compositional strategies of void and interval to construct spaces that are at once restrained and contemplative. Within this framework, the “rock” is no longer treated as a mimetic object but as a metaphysical carrier—an index of temporal accretion and inward reflection—articulating an Eastern aesthetic predicated on apprehending the vast through the minute.
Materially, Niu incorporates quartz sand into acrylic pigment, generating densely worked surfaces that evoke the tactility of geological formations. Through the interplay of wet application and dry abrasion, he reinterprets the cun (texture stroke) techniques of ink painting, situating the image in a liminal register between abstraction and figuration.
His palette is characterized by low-saturation tonalities—greys, ochres, umbers, and ink blacks—built up through subtle chromatic modulations and layered accumulations. These restrained shifts in temperature and value articulate a meditative spatial depth while imbuing the work with a sense of duration and poetic resonance. Eschewing overt narrative, Niu’s paintings privilege contemplation and perceptual experience, fusing the atmospheric sensibilities of ink painting with contemporary material practices to yield a distinctly inflected East Asian aesthetic.
Niu YuHe, born in 1982 in Tai’an, Shandong, graduated from the Shandong Art School. Since 2008, he has been engaged in independent artistic practice in Beijing and is currently active between Beijing and Yinchuan. He has long participated in exhibitions both domestically and internationally, and his works are widely collected.
