STEPHEN YAU
游榮光
B.1957
The “Home of Dragon” series tries to capture the vivid color, light and shade of nature, and to depict his mixed but overwhelming feelings towards his mother country. His adroitness in the handling of color and light gets full play. The translucent nature of watercolor wields its magic on the traditional Chinese infrastructures, enfolding them in a mystical interplay of light and shadow. Expressive layering, bold composition and bright tones of these paintings add to their visual charms.
Stephen Yau was born in Hong Kong in 1957. During the past thirty years, Yau has established himself as one of Asia’s finest watercolor artists. He has been hailed as a genius of light, shadow and reflection and has tackled subjects as diverse as still life, rusting metal objects, foliage, water reflection, flowers, Canadian inspiration and more recently, images of China. Currently, he is based in Toronto where he continues to develop his art on both international and cross-cultural fronts.
Yau has held over 30 solo exhibitions and more than 300 group shows in many countries. He has published 12 art books showcasing a wide range of his early and recent paintings. His paintings have won him numerous awards and are in the collections of Hong Kong Museum of Art, Hong Kong Heritage Museum, Hong Kong Urban Council, Philippe Charriol Foundation (HK), Hong Kong Jockey Club, Galerie D’Art Sepia in Paris, Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office (Canada), Diploma Collection in Canada as well as in private and public collections throughout the world. Yau was the chairman of the Hong Kong Modern Art Society of Watercolors (91-93), and is currently a member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolors (CSPWC), as well as the consultant for the Dynasty Watercolor Association of Toronto (DWA) and Art to Fly of Hong Kong.
