One of China’s most established and revered sculptors possessing a profound understanding of art, Wei Xiaoming’s work captures the true essence of life and beauty in expression, at times shocking the common mind, captivating the artist’s ultimate pursuit of beauty with simple, symbolic decorative marks.
Born in Beihai, Guangxi Province, in 1957, Wei XiaoMing graduated from Beijing’s Academy of Craft and Design in 1981. He furthered his studies in Austria after receiving a prestigious scholarship from Vienna Arts Institution in 1986 and graduated with a Master of Arts degree in 1988. He returned to China and became a lecturer in Beijing’s Central Academy of Fine Art in 1992. He is currently a professor at Tsinghua Unversity, School of Arts in Beijing.
From decorative designs to printmaking, from sculptures to architecture, he has experimented with diverse categories of visual arts in his career and displayed unusual excellence in each of these areas. His works are acquired by the China National Museum of Fine Art, France Art Museum, overseas commercial organizations and private art collectors.
2005
Presided over the “2005 Beijing International Art Biennale” as the planning committee and judge
Bronze sculpture “Chasing the Wind” is 2.35 meters high and permanently collected by the Beijing Academy of Fine Arts
Served as the planning committee of the 2005 China-Denmark Cultural Exchange Art Exhibition

Appointed to direct the Beijing International Sculpture Park project commissioned for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing

Completed large-scale bronze creation Great Wall Group Paintings in the Shahaiguan Great Wall Museum
Sculpture Olympic Wind won Outstanding Award for Fine Arts in the Asia-Pacific Region by the Chinese Olympic Organizing Committee

Artistic Director of the Beijing International Sculpture Exhibition, where over a hundred sculptors from 34 countries turned rocks and boulders into art

Created sculptures for the Phoenix Opera House in Ningbo and the Music Square of Bingjiang city
